How To Keep People From Turning Around in Your Driveway
If you live by an intersection of a well-traveled road or a business like I do, then you know what it’s like to have cars constantly turning around in your driveway and sometimes damaging your property. A few years ago, I had my gravel driveway and busted old concrete sidewalks replaced with new poured concrete, a beautiful sight it was! That was until I had what looked like regular traffic constantly driving up and down my driveway, missing the edges and driving through my lawn, running over Solar Lights, and leaving black marks from tight turns and aggressive acceleration. Most people would use my entire driveway to turn around vs. the end by the road, it became a safety concern as well as the property damage adding up. On average there were about 10 turn arounds each day at all times of the day/ night.
Solutions:
Everyone suggests adding a gate but for me that wasn’t practical or economical, so that idea went to the wayside immediately. I knew there had to be an easier way to reduce the amount of traffic without making life more difficult for myself and not emptying my wallet. Below are a few suggestions that worked for me.
- Add some landscaping such as grassy plants or allow the grass to grow a little higher where the road meets your driveway. The idea behind this is to “camouflage” where your driveway begins so by the time someone sees where your driveway begins they will be going too fast and will find another place to turn around. Once my grass grew around the edges of the driveway the amount of traffic decreased by 70%, thank goodness. You can even add a Corner Picket Fence like this one and plant some flowers to hide where the driveway meets the road.
- Driveway Markers, these are more for keeping people from driving off your driveway and running over decorations and damaging the lawn. The top features a decorative ABS Fleur-de-lis with red reflective tape, and it is powder coated to resist rust, so it will look good through the seasons for years to come. The Marker has an angled step on the bottom for trouble-free installation in the ground. Place it in your landscaping for an easy way to add an ornamental touch. Use it to mark a culvert or drainage area. Measures 41"h. Made in the USA
There are more ways to limit cars from turning around and some work better than others depending on your location. Right now, I’m down to about one car turning around per day, and no more property damage. If you have any tips or ideas feel free to leave it in the comment section below.
