How To Sharpen Mower Blades

You can save a lot of time and money by sharpening your mower blades at home. Once you realize how easy our Sharpening Kit makes old blades cut like new, you may enjoy sharpening your neighbors blades as well! Ok, that might be a stretch but who wouldn’t want to have an excellent looking lawn right next to their own? Make sure to look at the bottom of this page and see what customers have been saying about our Lawn Mower Blade Sharpening Kit!

Knowing when to sharpen your lawn mower blades can be a little confusing since there are no normal “intervals” and your mower won’t just let you know like your car might with a check engine light. The rule of thumb is to check your blades about every 15-20 hours and sharpen if needed. Sometimes you will accidentally hit a rock or stick, those are great times to skip the rule of thumb and assess any damage.

Sharpening lawn mower blades can seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple. With the right tools and a little bit of knowledge, anyone can sharpen their lawn mower blades. Here's how to do it.

Step 1: Remove the Blade. You can keep the blade on your deck if you like, personally I like taking it off and holding it in a vice.

The first step in sharpening a lawn mower blade is to remove it from the mower.

Start by tipping the lawn mower on its side, locate the bolt that holds the blade in place. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt and remove it, being careful not to damage the blade or the mower.

Step 2: Inspect the Blade

Before sharpening the blade, it is essential to inspect it for any damage. Look for cracks, chips, or any other signs of wear and tear that may affect the blade's performance. If you find any damage, it is best to replace the blade instead of trying to sharpen it.

Step 3: Sharpen the Blade Using This Lawn Mower Blade Sharpening Tool.

Once you have removed the blade and inspected it, it's time to sharpen it. You'll need to clamp the blade securely in a vise or clamp so that it doesn't move around while you are sharpening it. The Lawn Mower Blade Sharpening Kit includes a specially designed grinding wheel with a built in nylon guide. It ensures your mower’s blade is sharpened to the correct angle every time. No more guessing at the proper angle, and no more taking your mower to the shop just to sharpen the blade. Simply place the sharpener in any 1/4" or 3/8" drill to quickly give your blade a precision cutting edge in less than a minute.

Step 4: Balance the Blade

After sharpening the blade, it is important to check its balance. A blade that is out of balance can cause the mower to vibrate, which can damage the engine and reduce the quality of the cut.

To balance the blade, place it on the included Blade Balancer and make sure that it is level. If one side of the blade is heavier than the other, you'll need to remove a small amount of metal from the heavy side until the blade is balanced.

Step 5: Reinstall the Blade

Once you have sharpened and balanced the blade, it's time to reinstall it. Make sure to tighten the bolt securely, but be careful not to overtighten it, as this can damage the blade or the mower.

What Customers are saying...

  • "I used to sharpen it with a bench grinder this is much much easier"

  • "You can retire your file
I used to use a file to sharpen mower blades. After using this blade sharpener kit for some time I will not use the file again. The sharpener can be used with the blade on the mower or fastened in a vice on the bench. Either way you can get a good edge and balance to the blade with less time spent. Found out the sharpener can be used on the shovel too!"

  • "Gives a nice cut and is easy to use
My husband is nuts about the grass in the front yard. It must be cut just right. This keeps the mower blade sharp and you get a nice look. Our neighbors always compliment us on our front yard."
